Welcome to Microbiology and Immunology

Microbiology is a major discipline in the School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences and is located in L Block at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre. It has a distinguished history of world-class research in viruses and bacteria of the Asian region and is a focus for academic scholarship, research and teaching excellence in microbiology. Many of its graduates are nationally and internationally famous in industry, government and academia. As the only university teaching department in microbiology in Western Australia it provides leadership to scientific and professional microbiologists in the State.

The Discipline has strong research links with other disciplines within and outside the University, and links with national and international research institutions. Its research and teaching staff have one of the highest research grant success ratios in the University and the nation. The Discipline boasts its newest addition, The Marshall Centre for Infectious Diseases Research and Training. The Marshall Centre has been established to celebrate the award of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Professor Barry Marshall and Emeritus Professor Robin Warren. Microbiology encourages higher degree and research links with industry and organisations. Its staff are engaged in supervising BSc Hons, MSc and PhD students in research in bacteriology, bacterial physiology and genetics, industrial and mining microbiology, environmental microbiology, clinical microbiology, clinical virology, molecular biology, viral epidemiology and viral genetics, viral/gene associations in disease, viral immunology and cancer immunology.
